Apart from the classics the only romance novels I have really, really
enjoyed and and will spend money to buy are the ones by Georgette
Heyer. What a sense of humour she has got and these are romances not
some kind of soft porn as books on romance for women are these days.
You can re read her books. My first Georgette Heyer too was Regency
Buck and I re read it after many years just a few months ago and found
I liked it as much as ever.
She sure has done a lot of research to get the period and characters
so real. |

The only difference that will be seen is that we will no longer be
able to comment directly on a previous comment....only sign the
guestbook again....unless you happen to be a patroness - in which case
we can leave comments like this one. |

"With Georgette Heyer, you don't buy a book, you buy a world. If
it suits you, you settle down forever." -The Times.
My mother first introduced me to Georgette Heyer when I was 12 by
presenting me with a copy of "The Black Moth" as a birthday
present. I was most miffed.
Being only 12 at the time, the characters seemed quite ridiculus to me
and however hard I may have tried I just could not imagine a man
wearing red heels, "dashing".
About two years ago however I stumbled across the book. Upon re
reading it however, I was completely taken in with the language, the
superb detail in which historical events are so aptly recounted, the
charactes and ofcourse the romance.
I have been hooked ever since and have read almost all her historical
romances.
I owe her many many many happy hours.
Thank you so much. |

I am not particularly drawn to romance novels. I was introduced to
Georgette Heyer, along with other romance novelists, in High School.
Georgette Heyer is the only one I enjoyed, becuase her books were not
just romance. They described an entire society. My first book was
"Regency Buck". It is still one of my favorites. It has been
17 years since I first read her works and I find myself still drawn to
her books. I have read and re-read most of her books, including her
mysteries. I love the historical detail she includes in her books,
especially the description of the Battle of Waterloo in "An
Infamous Army". It's great to know there are other fans out
there. |

Just read my first Heyer novel, _The Quiet Gentleman_, and found it a
a great disappointment. I had heard of Heyer, of course, and was glad
to at last have time and opportunity to read this historical romance,
however I found nothing romantic about it at all! There was a total
absence of romance and affection between Gervase and Drusilla. And I'm
not referring to sex; I was not looking for a bodice ripper or
smouldering, erotic scenes. I was looking forward to reading a
ROMANCE.
Again, what a disappointment. |

I too have just finished reading Venetia; what an enjoyable,
satisfying read! I discovered GH when I was 14 years old when I found
Arabella in an English teachers book cupboard and have been a mad fan
ever since. Her stories are romantic, touching and such fun they make
me laugh out loud. I collected several titles in my teens and I've
been re reading them again. I find Im enjoying them even more now I am
in my 30's. I've started collecting the titles I don't have again. My
favourites are Devils Cub, Fridays Child and A Civil Contract.
I love this website and can't beleive there are so many other fans out
there xx |

I just discovered and read Venetia! It was great. I stayed up all
night to finish it. Does someone out there know if any of GH's other
books builds on this or has the same characters- Damerel and Venetia?
If so, can you tell me which books?
Thank you!

I began reading Georgette Heyer in High School and she is still my go
to for a great story at 36 (no matter how many times I have read it).
I have never met a better plot, chatacter, or dialogue and so Heyer
has set such a high standard it is difficult to find books that don't
disappoint. Thank you for this site! |

I love Georgette Heyers books. I discoverd them more or less by
accident. Since then I've read her stories with great joy.
Sadly not all of her books are available in German at the moment.
Still I hope to complete my collection till the end of June. I've just
ordered the missing books in English. |

I first discovered GH's Regency novels back in 1966 and now I have all
of them. Have read them and re-read them some 5 or 6 times each and
somehow I always seem to find something I've missed before.
I can just picture each and every character, clothes, houses, places
as if I'm there myself. I don't think I have ever come across any
other writer apart from perhaps Agatha Christie who can bring
everything to life in the same way.
I keep hoping that perhaps someone somewhere will discover as yet some
unpublished manuscripts which I know isn't possible but still I keep
hoping.
This is a great website which I have just discovered and I'll be
spending a lot of time here in the future I think.
Thanks for all the work. :-) |

I read my first Georgette Heyer book which I borrowed from a friend 20
years ago and I have not stopped looking for her books since then.
I treasure my Heyer books and reread them. The language of her books,
the intense banter shared by the principals, the humor of the
supporting characters, the climax scenes all fit in so beautifully.
There are few authors who have got it going right like her books just
the correct amount of tragedy, romance an impeccable comic timing. She
can be likened to PG Wodehouse, Shakespeare in getting the formula
right!
There are so many of my favourite books here Sylvester, Those Grey
Shades, Fridays Child. I am sure Gerogette liked the Satanas the best
as she has referred to him in several books. Amongst the ladies Grand
Sophy is absolutely delightful. Each character of hers has a peculiar
trait which is endearing.
Heyer is special and I am sure her books will enchant more readers
like me!! |

My mom introduced me to Georgette Heyer novels when I was a young
teen. Now in my 30's I still love to read them. They never get old!
And I'm looking forward to introducing them to my own daughter in a
few years. Thanks for such a great website. I learned quite a bit! |

:-) I have been an insane fan of the Regency genre for more years than
I can count. I was disappointed in the local lending libraries' lack
of a Regency section. Happily this led me to the 2nd hand bookstore
where, in the small and cozy environment, customers chat with each
other and share favorites. It was through one such conversation that
another patron told me that GH wrote mysteries that had every bit of
the same wit and detail of character development that her Regencies
did. Another goldmine! Hurrah! |
