Hi All!

My favorite three would be! Hard to choose!

1. An Infamous Army
2. Devil's Cub
3. Cotillion

There are many more that I love! GH is the best. I agree if they make a movie out of her books there should be a narator as there is much description in her books.

Hi all

My top three would have to be (the ones I go back to whenever I need a lift!)
the grand sophy - the first one I ever read
these old shades
cotillion

But then I've also just re-read Venetia, The Talisman ring, and the masqueraders and really enjoyed those too!

Jane,

You and your mother are right. Much of the humor in GH derives from the characters, and the reason we know about the characters is from the descriptions. We see them from the point of view of the narrator, objectively, as well as through their words and actions. And GH does have a wonderful turn of phrase; think of 'he was at all times so very odd...,' or 'Of course there are more important things than clothes; but not, I hold, when one is dressing for dinner.'

And I also don't know a lot of people who read GH; although there are more of them than one would think. I read a weblog written by a woman who knits and spins, and one day she posted a photo of her bookcase containing GH mysteries and outed many of her readers who commented. And her blog is called 'Enchanting Juno' (like Heyer, she's a tall girl). I just recommended Heyer to someone I know who likes Jane Austen. How exciting to discover GH and to have them all to read for the first time! One does sort of disappear into it.

I wonder how many of us also read Dorothy L Sayers (novels of manners with detective plots).

I have loved Georgette Heyer for over 50 years. My favourites are Venetia, Frederica, Sylvester, These Old Shades and Black Sheep. I think an ideal person to play most Heroes, should films ever be made, would be Richard Armitage. He is tall, dark, handsome and I think he is gorgeous

Hiya,
my top favourites are
1.The Grand Sophy
2.Devils Cub
3.Fredrica
I think the reasons i love the books and keep reading are a mixture i cannot think that there is just a singal thing, i love the characters which i think makes me love the book but the storylines with great descriptions, humour, and also for me historical accuracy make them wonderful. I do have a tendancy not to like books which are historically inaccurate or lack description, but a book that has the last two elements but no wonderful characters or humour is not an exciting book.
Hope that makes sense and is not me rambling on lol Smile

Thanks for the replies, everyone! Smile

It's very hard for me to pick, but I think that mine go:

1. Devil's Cub
1. Regency Buck
3. The Grand Sophy

(I can't wait to read Cotillion now after seeing it on several lists!)

I asked because I was discussing with my mother which ones I liked, and why - and I found that we had quite different motives for liking one above another. Angie, you said that you liked the descriptions (I agree!) and for my mother it was the humour. For me, it's the characters perhaps more than everything else... so what endears a particular book to you all? What kept you reading Heyer's books?

(Sorry for the twenty questions, but I'm yet to actually meet anyone else in person who's read these!)

Hello, Jane--
What a great thread. One of the reasons I love GH is the descriptions in her books, and because of that, I'm not too hopeful about films based on the novels. There would have to be a narrator.

Anyway, my three favorites (meaning the ones I reread most often) are

Cotillion
Friday's Child
The Grand Sophy

I am also really fond of The Toll-Gate, False Colours, and Regency Buck. Oh, and An Infamous Army...You catch my drift.

Ciao Jane
my top 3 books:

1. These Old Shades
2. the Reluctant Widow
3. Devil’s Cub

It is difficult to write an impartial list, one should choose between heart and literary merits. I mean, I read in this PumpRoom that one’s first novel usually remains one’s favourite, although some less sparkling novels have more objective value (like Civil Contract)

P.S. thanks again Sally Houghton, for the pleasure of connecting with other people who love and admire GH !

I can remember seeing Georgette Heyer books lying around the house from my earliest years, as my mother loves them - I'm 17 now and adore them! I've exhausted our supply and am about to hit the second-hand bookshops to see what I can find. She's an amazing author, who infuses her books with wit and populates them with well-detailed characters.

Just wondering, what are your top three books by her?

I THINK MANY MANY INDIAN WOMEN LOVE READING GEORGETTE HEYER. I first dicovered her when i was 12. Im 42 now and can still pull out one of her romances from my book shelf and feel wonderful reading it. When i read it now i almost am able to recite the lines and the words before i come to it. what joy and pleasure i get even after all these years. i love phoebe, vidal, sylvester, the kids in her books " i want my button", the valets and the villans. Myleast favourite however is these old shades. The duke of avon is her most complex character,i think. The satanas from black moth is very different from the monseiur of devils cub. but i liked him least in these old shades.the hero of toll gete and sleepy richard from masqueraders, the lovelorn swain from convenient marriage - where did she find them all?!
